These Terms set out the contract between you and The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (“ABRSM”, “we”, “us”, “our”) when you access and use the ABRSMsounds website and services (together, the “Service”). They explain how access, accounts, permitted use and licensing enquiries operate, and include limits on our liability and how to resolve problems.
By using the Service, you confirm that you accept these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service. These Terms do not affect any statutory rights you may have under UK law.

ABRSM is a music education body, music publisher and owner of a distinctive catalogue of music recordings and compositions. ABRSM’s registered office is:

2. Scope of the Service
2.1 The Service is an online catalogue designed to showcase ABRSM-controlled sound recordings (“masters”) and musical compositions (“works”) for potential use in film, television, games, advertising and digital media.
2.2 The Service does not grant users any synchronisation, master use, publishing or other usage rights. All uses must be subject to a separate written licence agreed directly with ABRSM (and any other applicable rightsowners).
2.3 Nothing on the Service constitutes an offer or guarantee that rights are available.
3. Eligibility & accounts
3.1 You must be 18 years or older (or the age of majority in your country) to create an account.
3.2 You agree to provide accurate information and keep your login details secure. You are responsible for all activity under your account.
3.3 We may suspend, restrict or terminate accounts at any time, including if we believe our content is being misused, copied, shared without permission, or accessed for unlawful purposes.
4. Intellectual property & permitted use
4.1 All masters, works, metadata, artwork, trademarks and other content on the Service (“Content”) belong to ABRSM or its licensors and are protected by UK and international intellectual property laws.
4.2 You may:
· stream or preview Content through the Service for evaluation purposes only
4.3 You may not:
· download, copy, record, reproduce, distribute, upload or adapt any Content unless expressly permitted in writing by ABRSM
· use any Content in a project, production, product or communication without a valid licence
· remove copyright notices or ownership information
· use any Content to train, develop or enhance artificial intelligence models or machine-learning systems
· use the Service in any way that infringes the rights of ABRSM or any third party
4.4 Any unauthorised use may constitute copyright infringement and may result in account suspension, legal action and/or damages.
5. Licensing enquiries
5.1 All requests to license Content must be submitted directly to: sync@abrsm.ac.uk
5.2 Grant of rights is subject to:
· full rights verification by ABRSM
· agreement of commercial terms
· execution of a written licence
· payment of applicable fees
5.3 Projects involving third-party publishing ownership require separate clearance from those rightsowners.
6. Third-party rights & accuracy
6.1 Some works represented in the Service include:
· public domain compositions
· compositions published or co-owned by third parties
6.2 While we make reasonable efforts to provide accurate rights information, we cannot guarantee:
· that rights are fully controlled by ABRSM
· that a licence will be granted
· that publishing information displayed is complete or correct
6.3 Users must carry out their own due diligence before proceeding with any use of Content.
7. Confidentiality
7.1 Any project briefs or confidential information shared with ABRSM will be handled confidentially and used solely for licensing evaluation unless otherwise agreed.
8. Technology, AI & accuracy
8.1 Some metadata, descriptive information or search tags on the Service may be generated or informed by artificial intelligence tools.
8.2 While we aim to ensure accuracy, we do not guarantee that AI-generated information is correct, complete or suitable for decision-making.
8.3 By using the Service, you acknowledge that search results and metadata are provided “as is” and may contain errors.
9. Prohibited uses
You must not use the Service to:
· infringe intellectual property or privacy rights
· transmit malware or malicious code
· circumvent security measures
· scrape, extract or harvest data or Content
· share account access with unauthorised persons
· engage in any illegal or harmful activity
10. Service changes & availability
10.1 We may update, suspend or remove Content or features at any time without notice.
10.2 We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation of the Service.
11. Limitation of liability
11.1 Nothing in these Terms limits liability for:
· death or personal injury caused by negligence
· fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation
· any matter that cannot be excluded under law
11.2 Subject to 11.1, ABRSM is not liable for:
· indirect, special, punitive or consequential losses
· loss of profit, reputation, data or business
· actions or decisions taken based on reliance on Content or AI-generated data
12. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify ABRSM from any claims, damages or expenses arising from your misuse of the Service or any breach of these Terms.
13. Governing law & jurisdiction
13.1 These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. 13.2 The courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute.
14. Updates to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Any significant changes will be notified on the Service. Continued use after changes take effect means you accept the new Terms.
